I heard an ad for an app, an app where you can tap into security accounts from neighbors. Why would neighbors give me access to look at their security feeds?
For protection, of course.
Turns out, if you download the Ring Neighbors app and log in, you can see what those living around you have posted, as far as what their home security cameras have found. I don't know dangerous our neighborhood is--by the latest submissions, not very. In the past couple of months we got a guy lurking and a doorbell ditcher.
If we had this technology (and a Ring door camera...) years ago we could have caught the sneaky neighbor kids who used to doorbell ditch our house over and over again. I think it would have been fun to pull up your phone at a function, say...at church, and say, "oh, by the way, your son (and his friends...) came by last night. He (and his friends...) apparently wanted us to come to the door, but for some strange reason, they ran off after ringing our doorbell. We knew they wanted to see us or talk to us because they kept coming to the door, ringing the doorbell and running away. Do you have any idea why he (and his friends...) would want to talk to us and why did he (and his friends...) keep running away? If you have any idea, please let us know."
Yeah, something like that.
It's easy to see the benefits of such a system. People concerned about the safety and well-being of their friends and neighbors. But, is it all good? There's something that makes me squirm thinking about how we're all on camera and if I happen to walk by a house at night--like if I'm out for a walk--an image of me walking by might be broadcast worldwide with the caption "Some bald guy sneaking around--do you know him?" It almost makes you want to stay inside and never leave.
Since we're humans and we tend to "improve" everything until we destroy everything, I wonder how much evolution these systems will undergo before they stop evolving.
Time (and cameras...) will tell.
