A Non-Spectating Bridge...

I graduated from Weber State University, or WSU, ten years ago this fall. It is an absolutely beautiful campus. I can say the same thing abut the University of Utah (where I also went…), and Brigham Young University (where I did not go…). But I think universities should be built in beautiful settings. After all, the schools are supposed to foster the best thinking of mankind—they should be in a place to help that happen.

When I attended WSU, I did not take advantage of all the student amenities available to students. Since I was there to get my graduate degree, I had other things to do, like work full-time, write, be in a show now and again. A place I never visited was the gym complex located between the school and the football field. It’s am amazing building, a place I would have liked to visit—and would like to visit now and take advantage of what it has to offer.

There was one detail of the building that—for me—proved to be a real head-scratcher. If you’re in the western section of the building and on the second floor, in order to get to the classrooms on the east side, you’ve got to walk across a bridge. I love bridges, be they for cars, trains, or pedestrians. I walked across that particular bridge several times before I saw a little sign. The sign read:

Keep Moving—No Spectating From This Area

I found that odd.

I guess I can understand, in a way, how some might not want people on the bridge looking down on them as they run, lift weights, or play hoops. The signs were not a permanent part of the bridge—they were added after the fact. Seems to me, if you design a bridge in a facility like that, part of the reason is to give those on the bridge a grand view of what’s below. It’s an impressive space and the bridge view allows a person to take it all in. If not, just build a tunnel.

I’m sure there’s a good reason for the sign and for not wanting people to just stand there. Maybe, since it’s a gym, they want people moving about, now stopping. Yeah…I think I’ll go with that.
