Evan Bacon...Brix Master!

I saw a lot of things at this year's Salt Lake Comic Con--a lot of impressive things. But one of the most impressive things was seeing the art of the son of a high school buddy, a son who is, literally, building a name for himself.

Evan Bacon builds things out of Lego bricks, big things. I got to meet him and I snapped a few pictures. I also met his mom. I checked his website and it looks both cool and ambitious. And more information will be coming next month.

I don't know a lot about what's coming--I'll have to wait until October like everyone else--but based on the website information (you can access it: HERE...), you'll be able to build your own life-sized sculptures.

The picture I took of the superhero sculptures at Comic Con doesn't do the art justice. It's so impressive. And I wish him and his new venture the very best!

They Built It And They Came...

You enter and your brain hurts for all the sights to see. You notice one costume and before you get a good look, another one comes in view. You make your way through the crowds and you notice the faces, the faces of parents and their children, of young couples showing their obvious love for each other, of friends taking in every moment of their adventure.

But most of all, if you really look, you notice something else on their faces...smiles. They've come from across town and across the country, vendors and panelists, celebrities and volunteers, all gathered under a huge roof, all gathered in the pursuit of fun.

As people meander, they laugh, they stare, they take pictures of each other, some costumes elaborate, some simple, all chosen to enhance the experience. They shuffle between booths. They wait in line. They sit exhausted as they enjoy a quick bite, all the time watching the masses walk by, all the time commenting to each other as they notice another costume, another alter-ego, another escape.

If you go, look around and maybe your brain will hurt by all there is to see.

Salt Lake Comic Con 2014 News

*

It's not everyday a non-member of the media gets to attend a press conference. Today I did.

There's some news concerning the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con. Organizers are taking the "Double The Pleasure, Double The Fun" attitude.

There are going to be two events, a Comic Con FanXperience (Fan X) April 17-19, 2014, and the big show Comic Con September 4-6, 2014, with double the floor space as last year. Estimates for next year's event top 100,000 people. They need that floor space!

The press conference was held two buildings over from where I work so my friend and I took a short break and I snapped a couple of pictures. I spotted my friend, Blake Casselman, who set me up with a sweet deal for last year's Comic Con.

And the Jazz Bear was in the house! (outside, actually...)

The first guests were announced. Cheers filled the hall.

News media were in attendance. Lots of cameras a snappin'.

There were also a few in costume. I tried to capture their unique essence in pictures, but I was unsuccessful.

All in all, I returned to work excited by the possibilities, and isn't that a great way to go back to work? You bet it is!
