Danyelle Leafty's "A Cloak Of Frost"...A Book Review

I finished Danyelle Leafty's A Cloak of Frost this afternoon. It's the second book of hers I've read and the first book in Leafty's Cloaks of Faerie series.

I should preface this by saying that this type of book is not one I would usually read. It's not because I have anything against this book in particular, it's just the genre. But, a good story is entertaining no matter the genre. Leafty's ability to spin words to create interesting characters and worlds and magic systems is on full display in this book. When you read one of Danyelle's books, guaranteed you'll be transported to a world of amazing and imaginative things.

Frost is a girl taken from her home by the North Wind, taken from her home and family. While away she learns how to use the magic she possesses, a magic that involves spinning stories. Leafty beautifully describes the process of how magic creates the words. I think that was my favorite part of the book.

Frost's adventures continues. She is sent on a quest to retrieve three objects, she confronts magical creatures and the story culminates with a battle. As I read this book I kept thinking of the fairytales we heard as children. It's got it all, magic, drama, the consequences of one's action. And it's a quick read. If you like fairytales, you'll love this book.

Yes, I've now read two Danyelle Leafty books. You know, I may just have to change my mind on reading this genre.

I got a notice a little while ago about a story collection from Danyelle Leafty and I'd like to let you know about it.

I've only read one of Danyelle's stories, The Curious Leaf: An Adventure in Wishing. I blogged about it back in July, 2014. You can read my review of that story: HERE.

I remember that story. It was sweet and endearing. This collection includes six stories, or one big story broken up in six parts. I have absolutely no idea what these stories are about, but I do know Danyelle and her husband. They're good people and I'd love to see some help come their way via sales from her writings. Life is adventure and sometimes those adventures are more intense than other times. And when those times are a bit crazy, it's nice to get a little support.

Being a writer means leaving yourself open. And whenever you submit your creation to the world there's risk. It's scary when you trust, especially when you're trusting those you don't know. I have a lot of respect for someone who not only goes through the pain, occasional heartache, and unbelievable joy that comes from writing a book. Danyelle has written many stories and they're all available. So, if you're interested, check out this collection, and maybe some of her other books. You'll not only get some quality literature, but you'll be helping out a great family.

Bookbomb Time...Danyelle Leafty's "Saltwater Curiosities"

I was asked if I would help spread the word on Danyelle Leafty's latest work, Saltwater Curiosities. Sure! I said. I know nothing of the book, but I have met the author and her husband and--unlike my book promotion blog for John Brown last week, I've read one of Danyelle's books (I still need to get one of John's books and read it...).

Danyelle's like a lot of us who write. She's published a lot of titles, actually, and is trying to get people to pick up one of her books, or click on a link where a person can buy one of her books. Her husband should get an award for "Most Promotional Spouse."

Wait...that came out wrong.

Let's just say he's a huge supporter and her biggest (metaphorically speaking...) fan. I applaud that. He's supporting a person who I'm sure is overwhelmed with all the comes from being a mom, a wife, and a creative person.

Danyelle Leafty's "The Curious Leaf"...A Book Review

But a wish, once wished, cannot be unwished. It finds purchase in our hearts and waits, remembering even when we forget.  Danyelle Leafty, The Curious Leaf: An Adventure in Wishing (Curiosities) 

I met Danyelle for the first time at Westercon, but I had seen her novella on social media before that (you can download or buy a copy of this book: HERE). When I finally got a copy of this story, it intrigued me. A wishing adventure?

Sure, why not?

As I began the story, I thought it was a children's tale (and it is...), but as with most good writing, the story expands beyond a simple story about a flower who wants to fly. It's about life and how we as humans view change, desires, restrictions, hard work and facing the unknown. No matter what you've experienced, there's a part of this story with which you can connect, can identify and relate. 

I enjoy stories where, as I'm reading, I do not know how it's going to end. Could the flower and its companion meet a grizzly end, thus confirming an age-old adage to "be careful for what you wish for?" Or will the characters ultimately find fulfillment and peace after their struggles? In my opinion, it could have gone either way and proved a satisfying story.

The Curious Leaf is a fast read, but it contains so much more than what's printed on the pages. At least it did for me.
