I got the e-mail this morning while riding in a bus on my way to work. I had expected to hear about the anthology selections soon, so when I got the notice, I knew what it was. I opened the e-mail, began reading, and my heart sank.
In the 25 years since I starting working--both as a student and as a full-time employee--I've applied for many jobs and submitted several writing contests. And I've received many, many, many rejection letters and e-mails. I know the drill, and so do most of you.
The message was very respectful, but it basically began with the editor explaining how difficult the decision was and that the difference separating those that made the cut and those that didn't was very slim. I always try to prepare for bad news, but I try to always have hope.
I was reading the e-mail on my iPhone so I was only able to read one paragraph at a time. I kept reading, and that's where the next paragraph came up.
"Congratulations to you all for completing a work, for entering, and for pursuing your passion. A special thanks to the winners, who are:"
Mine was listed among the names.
I'm so glad they liked my little story and I cannot wait to get involved in this project. The fist time I did this, I admit that I was wide-eyed and a little overwhelmed. This time I'm going to have some fun! Thanks for my family and all my friends for their support!
