Since It's Leap Year Day, I Must Blog About Bob's Vertical Challenge...It's Tradition

I don't know what it is about February 29th, but for the past three Leap Year Days I've blogged about an annual event from the last decade...

Bob's Vertical Challenge.

If you were fortunate enough to participate in non-profit events, they were a blast. Basically, teams of four skiers/snowboarders competed to see who could ski/snowboard the most vertical feet in a limited amount of time. The event was held at Snow Basin Ski Resort and proceeds went to benefit the Boy Scouts of America, Trapper Trails Council. Eventually, the event went the way of all the earth, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

I've blogged daily since 2011. On Leap Year Day 2012 I blogged about the Vertical Challenge. I completely forgot that I blogged about the event, so on Leap Year Day, 2016, I used the same photo from exactly four years earlier and blogged about the event again.

I did not realize this error until exactly four years later. On February 29, 2020, I decided to look at my blogging history to see what I blogged about on Leap year Day in 2012 and 2016. Turns out, it was the same thing. So, on 2/29/20 I blogged about the two previous Leap Year Day blog posts.

This leaves me no option as to this year's Leap Year Day blog post topic...

Gotta go with Bob's Vertical Challenge!

It was such an amazing event. Most took the day to be free from work and enjoy time on the slopes, but other teams really went for it. The amount of vertical feet skied/snowboarded by some of those teams was staggering. It raised a lot of money over the years for a good cause.

Somehow...This Turned Out To Be A "Leap Year" Photo

I've been blogging since 2011, and since I blog everyday, I've blogged twice on Leap Year Day. I was curious to see what I blogged about back in 2012 and 2016. In 2012 I blogged about Bob's Vertical Challenge, a very cool event that, in 2012, celebrated its fifth year. The event took place the day before, 2/28/2012, but on Leap Year Day I blogged about the official vertical challenge results.

Next, I checked 2/29/2016.

The title of that day's blog was simply, Leap Year's Day...

When I opened that day's blog post I saw...

The exact same photo. It seemed four years ago today I had the same thought...what did I write about on last Leap Year's Day? Today I posted the same picture because after eight years (or, after two consecutive Leap Year Days...) I think posting the same picture is now tradition.

So, it's not the most exciting photo. In fact, it's not really a good picture at all. But, to me, it reminds me of those years when I helped out with the Vertical Challenge. It was a charity event for the Boy Scouts, and I think it did a lot of good. I know those who participated had a good time. I call that a success.

I have no idea what will happen to me four years from now, or what I will be doing. Hopefully, I'll still be blogging, well into my thirteenth year. Maybe I'll forget that for three straight Leap Year Days I posted the same picture. I guess we'll find out in 2024.

Leap Year Day...

It's Leap Year Day, 2016 and because this particular day only comes around every four years, I wondered what I was doing on the last Leap Year Day.

And because my daily blog was in operation back then, I was able to look back at my blog post from Leap Year Day, 2012. I was a little surprised when I looked it up. I didn't talk about Leap Year Day at all. I posted the results of the Fifth Annual Bob's Vertical Challenge, an event that happened a few days before. And since I was also posting a Pic Of The Day, here's what I chose four years ago today. Not the most interesting photograph.

I have an app on my phone that highlights important events that happened on other Leap Year Days. I know my brother and sister-in-law got married on Leap Year Day. Davy Jones from the Monkees and Roland Bautista, guitarist from Earth, Wind, & Fire died on this date four years go. And it's the birthday of my friend, attorney, and fellow Pioneer Village stuntman Brandon Hobbs as well as the birthday of Howard Tayler, American author, podcaster, and illustrator of the Schlock Mercenary comics. They were both born on the same day so they're either 48-years old, or 12-years old.

On this date in 1940 Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to  win an Academy Award and on February 29, 1712 Sweden tried to return to the Old Style calendar by having a February 30th. I guess that didn't work out.

Personally I think it's a great day on which to have a birthday or get married. I could have gotten married on Leap Year Day, but I would have either needed to wait three and a half years, or gotten married one week after my wife and my first date. I mean, we got married quickly, but not that quickly. And as far as my birthday is concerned, I had no control over that one--that was my parent's decision...
