Ten Years Ago...We Had A Blast

A memory popped up on my Facebook feed today...

Ten years.

A decade ago I posted a short video I made (back when I was making short videos...) about a show I was doing at the time. It was Centerpoint Legacy Theatre's production of the classic, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was the first time that theater did the show and the second time I had the great fortune of participating.

I met some incredible people in that show, and thanks to social media, I've kept in touch with many of them since the last curtain fell, April 2, 2013. There's been marriages, babies, homes purchased, retirements announced, the children in the cast are getting married, and unfortunately, a divorce or two thrown in. That's what happens to fifty or so people in ten years.

Each show has its own personality, its own spirit. We meet, learn, sacrifice, and perform together for a few months, then we go our separate ways. Sometimes we meet up again in another show down the road, but that unique experience of that particular production can never be duplicated. Watching the video again took me back, back to when I was Issachar, I was not the oldest brother (a rarity...), and I danced mostly in the back row due to my talent level.

Good times.

For those in the show who watch the video, I hope it brings back some similar memories of hard work, long practices, and appreciative crowds.

Go Go Go Jo!

How Can Ten Years Go By So Fast...?

Got another "Memories" on social media today. It's strange that they're selecting things I once posted that are now more than a decade old.

How can ten years go by so fast?

I suppose that's a sign of getting older. It still blows my mind that it was only ten years after my father passed away, I graduated from high school. I lived a whole lifetime in those ten years. From eight to eighteen, it was way more than just a decade of time.

Ten years ago, we lived in Farmington, Utah. And on March 11, 2012, our family visited the Farmington City Library where my daughter sat on the floor and picked out a book. While she was checking it out, I snapped a picture--probably used a Kodak digital camera which I took with me everywhere back then.

It's ten years later. My daughter is driving home from seeing a play in which she helped choreograph. She's earned one degree. She's a young woman making decisions that will affect the rest of her life. The building in which I took the photo is gone...bulldozed and is now a parking lot. I wonder if the book still exists. We'll probably never know what book it was so there's no way to know if it's still part of the Davis County Library system.

We now live two counties over in a place I never imagined myself living. We no longer "check out" books at the library...we download them and read them on a screen. No more sitting on the floor, no more discovering the wonder of touching a physical object that someone wrote and someone else published.

A decade has passed since that winter evening. So much has changed. I can't believe it's flown by so fast.

Ten Years Ago, There Was Bob...And Uncle Sam

Tonight, I'm sitting in front of my computer and I wondered about the past--more specifically, what I was doing ten years ago. I think about this type of thing from time to time, so I pulled up the blog post I wrote April 20, 2011. I don't know why I decided to look back exactly one decade ago from today, and not five years, or last year. No, ten it was.

I remember the day--or part of the day--very well.

It was the day Bob and Uncle Sam came to town.

The event was an expo for the Davis County Chambers of Commerce. I still think the idea was genius. My friend Bob, who runs a financial planning institution, wanted to have a visual demonstration of what happens (or can happen...) to your money, your investments. We hired an actor to portray Uncle Sam to take a PayDay candy bar and divid the bar into two sections. We gave one portion to the expo attendee and the other portion went into a toilet.

The expo was an all-day affair. I only attended near the end. As I recall, it went okay. In my opinion they just didn't have the people attending.

That expo took place ten years ago. I blogged about this when it happened and you can access the blog post: HERE, if you're interested, that is. As far as the part-time job went, it ended shortly after--I can't remember exactly when it ended. I don't think the company ever attended the expo again, or even if the expo took place. Too bad...it was fun when Bob and Uncle Sam hung out.
