Watching Snowfall...Slowed Down

I live in a mountains and that means we get late winter storms. This morning we woke up to snow, not bad, but snow nonetheless.

I have so many friends who hate snow. Some would love to never have it snow here again. Some love snow in December--just in time for Christmas--but would love it if it never snowed after Christmas. I reject both those opinions. Without the snow those sun-worshipers wouldn't have places to go waterskiing in the winter, or have water to drink...you know, simple things like that.

This morning I decided to take out the phone and video the big beautiful flakes falling to earth. They turned out pretty cool. I posted a video of one of the slow-motion videos here. It made me think about how people love water. People go to the ocean to be at one with nature, or to the edge of a lake and let the water heal them mentally. For me, snow does the same thing. watching it fall, seeing it blanket the world around me. It's relaxing--especially if I don't have to drive in it.

Ah, Slow Mo...But Do We Need Slo-Mo Selfies?

I LOVE the slow motion video function on my phone. My phone is about five years old, but I don't care. I don't use it as much as I could or should, but when I do shoot a video using the slow motion function, I am mesmerized when I play them back and watch what I saw slowed down.

I don't think I'm alone in this, either.

Lately, we've been inundated with ads from the good people at Apple showcasing their latest iPhone feature--the slow motion selfie. But, do we really need this technology? Does our civilization--arguably, the most advanced in the history of mankind--have use for this new function?

Time will tell.

I do like the ads--don't get me wrong. And, if I'm not mistaken, one of the actors in these ads is a Utahn, Frank Gerrish (I apologize if I'm wrong...). Except, when you do a stop-motion shot of those slo-mos, let's just say, some of those pauses may not be the most flattering.

The other day the snowplow came down the street, and it hit me--why not video this in slow motion?

And so I did.

And so, like me, you can be mesmerized by its awesomeness, too.

A Sky Of Fire...And Dragonflies

Owl City sings about ten million fireflies and ten thousand lightning bugs, but last night I saw a whole bunch of dragonflies. I don't think anyone's written a song about them. I'm probably wrong.

I've posted many pictures of sunsets. If we can fight back the quaking aspens growing to the west, we'll be able to see more, and hopefully post more photos. But last night as I headed to the back porch, the sunset--though amazing--wasn't what caught my attention. It was all those dragonflies.

I brought out my good camera to see if I could capture the experience. Even though I was please with the pictures and the videos, it didn't quite compare. All I could see were all those bugs flying around and eating mosquitoes. The fact that the sky behind them was awash is brilliant oranges, reds, and blues was an added bonus.

I pulled out the iPhone and tried out the slo-mo video option.

That's when I captured magic.

The problem is, the video resolution is not good enough to see the detail.

So, I put the whole thing on YouTube. If you want to see it, just click: HERE.

Even though you can't see what I saw, I wanted to give you a little taste. I hope you click on it and enjoy it. I know I did.
