A New Project...

The Thrill of a New Project...

A couple of weeks ago I had one of those moments as a writer where you ask yourself, what's the point? I had a professor in grad school--a couple of them, actually--say that there are times when you feel like a total fraud as a professor. They said they always felt like someone might one day call them on their "knowledge" of English. There are times I catch myself feeling the same way about writing...

I got a call from a friend last week and he wondered if I could help add any ideas to a project they've been working on. We spoke and I thought their idea was brilliant, perfectly-timed, and I began thinking of some things to write.

At work today my computer died so I took out my laptop, opened the Celtx program (which is a free download, by the way--great script writing software...) and began. Since my friend has been working on this project for a while, I wasn't sure if I was overstepping my invitation to help. I thought I'd send him what I had so far to get his opinion. After the first scene, I e-mailed him with what I got. His response was very kind.

"So...I can't wipe the smile off my face.  Holy crap...good stuff.  This is going to rock!  I like how you have portrayed the characters...similar to how we have been thinking."

This uplifted me and so, on a break, I wrote a little bit more. When I got home from work, he had sent me this...

"I've decided I can't read this during work hours...people are starting to wonder why my face swells up, mouth wide open, no sound comes out...but there is a twinge of violent shaking.
I had to stop reading halfway through I was laughing so hard.  This is way too close to home my friend. Lol."

I mean, as a writer, you live for comments like this. Hopefully, we can build on this and create something truly wonderful. Time will, indeed, tell...

  1. Yay for new projects! This one sounds like it's obviously working and is effective for your reader. :)
